Domains of the Exam
The RBT exam is divided into six major domains, each representing a core part of your daily responsibilities as a technician. Understanding these domains is non-negotiable.
Here’s the breakdown of the six domains:
- Measurement
- Assessment
- Skill Acquisition
- Behavior Reduction
- Documentation and Reporting
- Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice
1. Measurement
This domain focuses on collecting, recording, and displaying data. Its similar to the PTCB Exam Practice. In ABA, decisions are always data-driven.
The exam may ask you about continuous measurement procedures (like frequency and duration), discontinuous methods (like partial interval recording), or how to graph and interpret data. You’ll need to know not just the definitions but when to use each method.
2. Assessment
This section evaluates whether you understand how to assist in assessments of client behavior. Expect questions on preference assessments, skill assessments, and functional behavior assessments.
It is not asking you to design these assessments (that’s a BCBA’s job), but you must know how to carry them out and why they’re important.
3. Skill Acquisition
The largest domain on the exam. It covers teaching new skills, from communication to daily living tasks. You’ll need to know how to use prompting, shaping, chaining, reinforcement, and generalization techniques.
The test may also present you with sample intervention plans and ask you to identify the correct next step.
4. Behavior Reduction
You’ll be tested on behavior intervention plans and the principles of reducing challenging behaviors. Think about functions of behavior (escape, attention, access to tangibles, sensory), reinforcement schedules, extinction procedures, and replacement behaviors.
You will be expected to apply these strategies in scenario-based questions.
5. Documentation and Reporting
This domain is about accuracy and professionalism in your notes. RBTs must document what happens in sessions, report changes to supervisors, and maintain confidentiality.
Many questions will check if you understand the difference between objective and subjective documentation.
6. Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice
The final domain covers ethics, professionalism, and knowing your limits. You need to know what an RBT can and cannot do, when to ask for supervision, and how to follow BACB’s code of ethics.
This domain ensures that you’ll protect clients and maintain professional boundaries.
Together, these domains reflect your real-world responsibilities.
BACB designed the exam so every question connects directly to the RBT Task List.

Free RBT Study Guide Online
Let’s be real, you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on study prep if you know where to look. There are plenty of free RBT study guides online, and they’re more than enough to get you ready if you use them wisely.
But here’s the catch: not all free guides are created equal. Some are outdated, and others only scratch the surface.
Here’s how you separate the useful from the useless:
- Check the Source
If the study guide comes directly from BACB or a recognized ABA training provider, you’re good. If it looks like someone threw it together overnight with no citations, skip it. - Look for Task List Alignment
A real study guide should follow the RBT Task List (2nd edition). If it doesn’t reference it directly, that’s a red flag. - Scenario-Based Practice
The best free guides don’t just list definitions—they include practice questions that look like the ones on the actual exam. - Updated Content
The exam evolves. Always check the publication date. If the guide is more than a few years old, it might not reflect the current exam structure.
Some free resources worth checking:
- BACB Official RBT Handbook – not a study guide per se, but it explains the exam in detail.
- ABA Training Websites – several offer free sample questions.
- Quizlet Sets – while not official, many RBT candidates swear by user-created flashcards.
